Abstract
Changesinbiogeochemicalcyclesandtheclimatesystemduetohumanactivitiesareexpectedtochangethequantityandqualityofplantlitterinputstosoils.Howchangingqualityoffreshorganicmatter(FOM)mightinfluencetheprimingeffect(PE)onsoilorganicmatter(SOM)mineralizationisstillunderdebate.HerewedeterminedthePEinducedbytwo 13C-labeledFOMswithcontrastingnutritionalquality(leafvs.stalkof Zeamays L.).Soilsfromtwodifferentforesttypesyieldedconsistentresults:soilsamendedwithleaftissueswitchedfasterfromnegativePEtopositivePEduetogreatermicrobialgrowthcomparedtosoilsamendedwithstalks.However,after16dofincubation,soilsamendedwithstalkshadahigherPEthanthoseamendedwithleaf.Phospholipidfattyacid(PLFA)resultssuggestedthatmicrobialdemandforcarbonandothernutrientswasoneofthemajordeterminantsofthePEobserved.Therefore,considerationofbothmicrobialdemandsfornutrientsandFOMsupplysimultaneouslyisessentialtounderstandtheunderlyingmechanismsofPE.OurstudyprovidedevidencethatchangesinFOMqualitycouldaffectmicrobialutilizationofsubstrateandPEonSOMmineralization,whichmayexacerbateglobalwarmingproblemsunderfutureclimatechange.
