Cover letters are quite possibly THE most important part of the application process. Cover letters are what get your resume noticed, and they are what will get you the interview. After you've been invited for an interview, your chances of getting the job are much better. Until you've received that call though, you're totally in the dark. Cover letters are all about getting that interview invitation call.   So, to help you build the best possible cover letter, I'll be sending you a short series of tips that will enable you to build the attention-getting cover letter that you need to stand out from the crowd.Tip: Identify Your Target Market 。  Today's tip, taken from the world of marketing, (after all, this is about marketing and selling yourself!) is to identify your target market. That is the first step in any marketing campaign, and it should be the first step in writing a cover letter as well.  Find out as much as you can about the company, and specifically, the department you're applying to. What is their mission, their goals and their objectives? How do they do business? What are their services policies and standards, etc etc.

Once you know these things, think about how your own objectives, values and experiences fit into and complement those of the company. Without sounding cheesy, weave these things into your cover letter. Your goal is to show them that you are trying to achieve the same things they are, or that you have a similar philosophy, or whatever the commonality is that you identify.

When doing this research, a great place to start is Google and the company website. You might be surprised what you can find just with these two tools!

The next step is sometimes more difficult, but just as important, and well worth the effort. As part of the target market, you need to identify exactly who the person is that will be receiving your application. Name, title, etc. Sometimes this is easy, and you'll be given this information at the outset. Other times it may take some digging.

One excellent way to go about this is simply to phone the company and ask the secretary who that person is. If you're too embarrassed, get a friend to phone for you from a phone booth while pretending they have whooping cough. You don't have to say who you are, it can be anonymous.

The point of this exercise is to be able to put the correct name on the paper. It sounds trivial, but it will separate you from the rest immediately. People notice their own name on paper, and seeing their name on your cover letter will give you a bit of an advantage in a sea of "To Whom It May Concern" letters.

In today's highly competitive job market, you need every edge you can get. Applying these market research principles will help you gain that edge.
