鲁地（今山东省西南部）有人拿着长竹篙进城门。开始竖着拿，城门不够高，不能进去；后来横着拿，城门不够宽，还是不能进去。想来想去，没有想出好办法来。一会儿，有一个老头儿走到他面前说：“我不是什么圣人，但是经历的事情却很多。让我告诉你一个好法子罢。你何不用锯子把竹篙从中截断，以便进城门呢？”那个拿竹篙的人，便依照老头儿的主意，把竹篙截断了。
　　【赏析】本篇出自我国diyi本笑话集《笑林》（三国时魏人邯郸淳作）。既嘲笑了执长竿的鲁人，笑他不知变通；更嘲笑了锯竿入城的老父，笑他自作聪明，好为人师。后者不仅可笑，而且有害。这个故事一直流传到现在，清代《嘻谈续录》中的“捉糊涂虫”便是从它演变出来的。

　　There　was　once　a　man　in　Lu　who　was　carrying　a　long　bamboo　pole　to　pass　a　city　gate.　At　first　he　carried　it　vertically　but　the　gate　was　not　high　enough　for　it　to　get　thcough　Then　he　tried　it　horizontally　the　gate　was　not　wide　enough　and　he　failed　again.　He　thought　over　it　again　and　again　but　couldn＇t　find　a　way　out.　After　a　while　an　old　man　came　towards　him　and　said　″　I　am　not　a　sage　but　I　have　had　much　experience.　Let　me　give　you　a　good　idea　why　don＇t　you　cut　the　pole　into　two　with　a　saw　so　that　you　can　enter　the　gate﹖　As　had　been　told　by　the　old　man　the　man　cut　the　pole　into　two　pieces
